What a Placement Here Actually Involves

Brilliant Esystems has hosted SIWES industrial attachment placements since 2015 and takes between forty and sixty interns a year across our three offices. We accept placements under the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme, the national scheme administered by the Industrial Training Fund, as well as direct internship applications from people on other accredited programmes. Whichever route brings you here, the placement is the same: supervised, structured and assessed against written objectives.

The honest picture of what an intern does: you are given real work, sized so that it can be reviewed and corrected without a client being harmed. That means writing tests and small features against a live codebase, building and documenting a development environment, triaging first-line tickets alongside a service desk engineer under supervision, running vulnerability scans on internal systems, cleaning and modelling a dataset, or documenting a network topology from the ground up. You will not be photocopying, and you will not be sitting behind somebody watching them type for six months.

Every intern is assigned a named supervisor at Engineer II level or above who is responsible for your objectives, your weekly one-to-one and your final assessment. Supervisors carry a maximum of two interns at a time, which is a deliberate limit — the constraint on how many placements we can offer is the number of people who can teach properly, not the number of desks we have. You will also be paired with a buddy from the graduate trainee cohort, who is close enough to your position to remember what was confusing.

The first week is a proper induction: information security and confidentiality training, an introduction to our ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 27001 processes, account and equipment provisioning, and a tour of the practice you are joining. From week two you attend your team’s daily stand-up as a full participant. Interns are welcome at guild meetings, at Learning Friday sessions and at internal talks, and several have presented at them.

Six practices host attachment placements. Indicate your first and second preference in your application; allocation depends on supervisor availability in the intake month you request.

Software Engineering

Kano and Lagos · largest intake

Version control, automated testing, code review and small feature work on Java, Spring Boot, React and Flutter codebases. Interns here typically finish with real commits merged into a product, a working local development environment they built themselves, and a genuine understanding of why code review exists.

The service desk is the fastest place to learn. Shadowing then supervised handling of first-line tickets, asset management, endpoint provisioning and remote support across an estate of more than 12,000 managed endpoints. Excellent for anyone who wants to build professional communication as well as technical skill.

Linux fundamentals, virtualisation, container basics, backup verification and structured cabling. Time in our Kano data centre covers power, cooling, rack discipline and the physical layer that most people never see. Interns leave able to build a server from bare metal to a running service.

Day shifts only, alongside Tier 1 analysts. Vulnerability scanning of internal systems, phishing simulation analysis, asset inventory work and ISO/IEC 27001 evidence gathering. Client data access is restricted, so the work is weighted toward our own estate and toward laboratory exercises.

Kano and Hybrid

SQL, Python, data cleaning, dimensional modelling and dashboard building on anonymised datasets. Interns with a strong quantitative background may join a supervised piece of model evaluation work. This practice expects you to arrive with at least basic SQL, and we will tell you so at screening.

Placement Tracks

Two tracks, four intake months. The six-month track follows the standard SIWES industrial attachment period; the three-month track suits shorter vacation placements and direct internship applications. Stipends are paid monthly in arrears by bank transfer and are intended to cover transport and meals.

How to Apply and What Happens Next

Seven stages. Apply at least eight weeks before your intended start month — the six-month tracks in April and September fill first.

Create an account at /user/register

Everything starts with an account on this website. Go to /user/register, sign up with the email address you check most often, and confirm the verification message. Your account is how you submit the application, how we send you documents to sign, and how you will later reach the intern portal. Use a personal email address rather than one issued by your institution, because those often expire.

Submit the placement application

Once signed in, complete the placement form: your first and second choice of practice, your preferred track and intake month, your location, and a short statement of no more than 300 words on what you want to learn. Attach your CV and the formal introduction letter from your institution’s industrial training coordinator. Applications without that letter cannot be processed.

Screening and practice matching

People & Culture check the paperwork and pass your application to the practices you selected. A supervisor with capacity in your intake month reviews it and may arrange a short conversation of about twenty minutes, held online, covering what you have already built and what you want out of the placement. Expect a decision within 15 working days of a complete application.

Offer and ITF paperwork

A placement letter is issued to you and copied to your institution. We complete and sign the SIWES commencement of attachment form, the ITF Form 8 employer sections and any acceptance letter your institution requires, and we return them within 5 working days. You sign our confidentiality and acceptable use undertakings before your first day.

Induction week

Your first week covers information security and confidentiality, our ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 27001 processes, laptop and account provisioning, workplace safety, and an introduction to your practice. You meet your named supervisor and your buddy, and you agree the written objectives your placement will be assessed against.

Track your placement at /intern/dashboard

Approved interns track their placement, logbook and supervisor feedback in the intern portal at /intern/dashboard. Sign in with the account you created, record your weekly logbook entries there, upload the forms your institution requires, and read the comments your supervisor leaves after each one-to-one. Keep it current — the final assessment is built from what is in the portal.

Final assessment and certificate

In your last fortnight your supervisor completes the assessment form your institution requires, scores your logbook and objectives, and holds a closing review with you. We issue a certificate of completion on company letterhead, signed by the practice head, and interns assessed at the top two bands are invited to apply to the graduate trainee programme when they qualify.

Placement Questions

What documentation do I need from my institution?

A formal introduction or placement letter from your industrial training coordinator, on institution letterhead, stating your programme, the required attachment period and the start and end dates. We also need any acceptance form your institution wants us to complete, and the assessment form your supervisor will need at the end. Upload all of it to the intern portal at /intern/dashboard once your placement is approved.

Which ITF and SIWES forms do you complete?

We complete and sign the employer sections of the SIWES commencement of attachment form, ITF Form 8, and the supervisor assessment form at the end of your placement. We also stamp your logbook at each review. Everything is returned within 5 working days of receipt, and if your institution has its own variant of these forms we will complete that instead.

Is the logbook assessed, and how?

Yes. You make a weekly entry describing what you did, what you learned and what you found difficult. Your supervisor reviews and comments on it in the intern portal at each fortnightly one-to-one, and signs the physical logbook at the end of each month. The final score your supervisor submits to your institution is built from the logbook, the agreed objectives and the closing review.

Do you provide accommodation?

No, we do not provide or pay for accommodation, and the stipend is calculated to cover transport and meals rather than rent. Our People & Culture team keeps a list of reputable letting agents near each office and will share it with interns relocating from outside the city. Interns based in Kano may use the staff shuttle on the main routes and the subsidised canteen at the headquarters.

Can I complete the attachment remotely?

Only on the hybrid data track, and even then you must attend the Kano office for induction week and for one day a fortnight. Everything else is on site. Most of our work involves client systems and secured environments where remote access simply cannot be granted to a placement account, and a remote attachment also makes proper supervision much harder.

Will I receive a certificate of completion?

Yes. Every intern who completes the agreed period and the objectives receives a certificate of completion on company letterhead, signed by the head of the host practice, stating the dates, the practice and the scope of work. It is issued in your final week alongside the completed assessment form for your institution, and a copy is stored in the intern portal for you to download later.

Can a placement lead to a permanent job?

Not directly, because entry to permanent roles runs through the graduate trainee programme or an advertised vacancy. But interns assessed in the top two bands are flagged in our system and invited to apply to the trainee programme as soon as they qualify, and their supervisor’s assessment forms part of the file. Thirty-one former interns have joined us as graduate trainees since 2018.

What should I bring on the first day?

A means of identification, your institution letter, your bank details for the stipend, your logbook, and a notebook. We issue the laptop and all accounts during induction week, so you do not need to bring a computer. Dress is smart casual; the offices are air-conditioned and the Kano data centre is cold, so bring something with sleeves if you are on that rotation.

Placements Are Free — We Pay You

Brilliant Esystems Limited charges nothing for an industrial attachment or internship placement. There is no application fee, no placement fee, no "acceptance letter" fee, no charge for completing your ITF or SIWES forms, no charge for the certificate of completion and no deposit of any kind. On the contrary, we pay a monthly transport stipend of between ₦60,000 and ₦90,000 depending on your track and location.

Placements are approved only through this website. Create your account at /user/register and submit the application there; once approved, everything else is handled in the intern portal at /intern/dashboard. No member of our staff, and no agent, is authorised to accept money, gifts or favours in exchange for a placement, a supervisor signature, a logbook stamp or an assessment score.

If anyone asks you for payment, report it immediately to [email protected] or call +234 802 913 8013. Report it even if the person names a real member of our staff. We investigate every report and we have dismissed staff over this before.
