EARLY CAREERS

Graduate Trainee Programme

Eighteen months, three six-month rotations, an assigned mentor, funded certification and a capstone client project — ending in confirmation to Engineer I on a permanent contract.

A Structured Route into Enterprise Technology

The Brilliant Esystems Graduate Trainee Programme has run since 2017 and it exists for a straightforward reason: the gap between a Nigerian technology degree and a productive first engineering job is wider than it should be, and we would rather close it ourselves than complain about it. Trainees join on a fixed-term eighteen-month contract, are paid a monthly salary from day one, and rotate through three practices in six-month blocks before confirmation. A little over four in five complete the programme and are confirmed into permanent roles.

The rotations are real work, not observation. From your fourth week you will be assigned tickets on a live client engagement with an experienced engineer reviewing everything you produce. In the first rotation you might be writing tests and small features on BrilliantEd or BrilliantHR; in the second you might be building infrastructure with Terraform or triaging alerts in the security operations centre; in the third you are typically trusted with a self-contained component of a client deliverable and expected to present it at a design review.

Every trainee is assigned a mentor from outside their current rotation team, meeting fortnightly for the full eighteen months. The mentor is your continuity — the person who knows the whole arc of your programme while your rotation managers change three times. Mentors receive training before their first pairing and are drawn from Engineer II level upwards. Several of our current leads were themselves graduate trainees and now mentor the cohorts behind them, which is exactly the flywheel we wanted.

The programme also funds one professional certification of your choice from an approved list, including AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate, Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate, Cisco CCNA and CompTIA Security+. The company pays for the training and the first examination attempt, and the ICT Training Academy in Kano runs the preparation bootcamps in-house. Trainees sit the examination during the second rotation, when the material connects to what they are doing every day.

The Rotation Tracks

You will complete three of these six tracks. Preferences are collected at the assessment centre and confirmed after your first fortnight, and no trainee spends two rotations in the same practice.

Software Engineering

Rotation 1, 2 or 3

Java and Spring Boot on the server, React and TypeScript on the client. You will pick up version control discipline, code review, automated testing and the discipline of shipping behind a feature flag. Trainees on this track typically work on BrilliantEd, BrilliantHR or BrilliantProcure.

Eligibility and What You Are Paid

You are eligible if you hold a first degree at Second Class Lower or above, or a Higher National Diploma at Upper Credit or above, in any discipline, and you completed that qualification within the last three years. Graduates of any subject may apply — we take physicists, mathematicians, statisticians, electrical and electronic engineers, accountants and computer scientists — but you must be able to demonstrate genuine interest in technology through a project, a portfolio, a certification or self-taught work you can talk through in detail. You must have completed NYSC or hold a valid exemption or exclusion certificate before your start date.

Trainees are paid a monthly salary of ₦250,000 gross for the first two rotations, rising to ₦320,000 for the third once you are contributing to client deliverables independently. From day one you receive full HMO cover for yourself, group life assurance, pension contributions under the Pension Reform Act, and the same laptop and monthly data allowance as permanent staff. Trainees based in Kano use the staff shuttle and the subsidised canteen on the same terms as everyone else.

On successful completion at eighteen months you are confirmed as Engineer I on a permanent contract, currently within a band of ₦3.6m to ₦5.4m gross per year depending on assessed performance, and you become eligible for the 13th-month payment, the performance bonus and the full benefits package. Confirmation is decided by a panel drawn from your three rotation managers and your mentor, against criteria published to you at the start of the programme. There is no bond and no repayment clause: if you complete the programme and choose to leave, you leave.

Intake Calendar

Two intakes a year, in April and September. Applications for the April 2026 cohort are open now. Assessment centres are held at the Kano headquarters and travel is reimbursed for applicants coming from outside Kano State.

The Selection Process

Five stages over roughly seven weeks from the closing date. Around 2,400 applications produce a cohort of between eighteen and twenty-four.

1

Online application

Complete the application form and attach your CV, degree or HND certificate or statement of result, and your NYSC discharge, exemption or exclusion certificate. There are three short written questions of 150 words each about a technical problem you have solved. Read them properly — this is where most applications are lost, and we read every answer.

2

Aptitude test

A two-hour online test covering numerical reasoning, logical reasoning and basic programming concepts, sat under remote supervision on a published date. No prior programming language is assumed; the coding section uses pseudocode. Practice materials are sent to everyone who reaches this stage, a fortnight in advance, at no cost.

3

Technical challenge

A take-home exercise scaled to four hours, with a full week to submit. You choose a stream — software, infrastructure, data or security — and complete a small practical task with a short written explanation of your approach. Incomplete submissions with clear reasoning score better than complete ones you cannot explain.

4

Assessment centre in Kano

Two days at the headquarters on Ahmadu Bello Way: a group problem-solving exercise, a technical discussion of your challenge submission with two engineers, a short presentation, and a values interview with a director. Travel from anywhere in Nigeria is reimbursed and accommodation is provided for applicants travelling from outside Kano State.

5

Offer and onboarding

Offers are issued within ten working days of the assessment centre, with a contract setting out the eighteen-month programme, the salary progression and the confirmation criteria. Onboarding runs for the first full week of the intake month and covers induction, information security training, tooling, and matching to your mentor and first rotation.

Programme Questions

Do I need a computer science degree to apply?
No. Any discipline is accepted at Second Class Lower or Upper Credit and above. Around 30% of recent cohorts read something other than computer science — physics, mathematics, statistics, electrical engineering, economics and accountancy are all represented. What you do need is evidence of genuine engagement with technology: a project, a portfolio, a certification, or work you taught yourself and can discuss in depth.
How many years since graduating can I apply?
Up to three years from the award of your degree or HND. If you have been in unrelated employment since then, that is not a disadvantage; several strong trainees came to us after two years in banking or teaching. If you are more than three years out and want to change direction, apply to a permanent role at Associate Engineer level or look at the ICT Training Academy certification tracks first.
Can I choose my rotations?
You express preferences at the assessment centre and again after your first fortnight, and we meet the first preference for around three-quarters of trainees. Allocation also depends on where live engagements have capacity to supervise properly, because a rotation with nobody to teach you is worthless. No trainee spends two rotations in the same practice.
What is the capstone project?
In the final rotation each trainee owns a defined component of a live client deliverable, from requirements through to production release, supported by their rotation manager but accountable for the outcome. You present it to a panel including a director in the seventeenth month. Recent capstones have included a reconciliation report module for BrilliantRevenue and an alert-triage automation used by the security operations centre.
Which certification is funded and what if I fail?
One certification from the approved list: AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate, Microsoft Azure Administrator Associate, Cisco CCNA, or CompTIA Security+. The company pays for the training and the first examination attempt. If you are unsuccessful, we fund a second attempt once, provided you have attended the academy bootcamp. There is no penalty and it does not affect confirmation.
Am I bonded to the company after the programme?
No. There is no bond, no training repayment clause and no restriction on where you work next. We think a programme that has to trap people is a programme that is not good enough. In practice, 83% of trainees confirm into permanent roles and the median tenure of a confirmed former trainee is now over four years.
Is the programme available in Abuja and Lagos?
The onboarding week and the assessment centre are always held at the Kano headquarters. Rotations are mostly Kano-based, though a minority of trainees complete one rotation in Abuja or Lagos where an engagement suits, with accommodation and travel provided. Trainees who want to be based in Lagos long term should say so early; several have transferred at confirmation.
What happens if I am not confirmed at eighteen months?
Confirmation is assessed continuously, not sprung on you at the end. If performance is short of the criteria you will know by the twelfth-month review and a written improvement plan will be agreed with your mentor. Where confirmation is not offered, we provide a reference, a full record of the rotations and certification achieved, and practical help finding a role elsewhere.
